Ottoman Coffee Table: A Versatile Addition to My Living Room

I wanted a coffee table that could also provide extra seating. I bought an ottoman coffee table. It's a large upholstered ottoman (120cm x 70cm) with a removable tray on top. With the tray, it's a coffee table (holds drinks, books). Remove the tray, and it's a footrest or extra seat. For small living rooms, the dual function saves space. For large rooms, it adds versatility. I use mine daily.

Ottoman vs Coffee Table

A standard coffee table is hard (wood, glass, metal). An ottoman is soft (upholstered). My ottoman coffee table combines both: a hard tray on a soft ottoman. The tray is removable and has a lip (prevents drinks from sliding). The ottoman has storage inside (lifts open). For families with toddlers, an ottoman is safer (no sharp corners). For homes without young children, a standard coffee table is fine. Choose based on your needs.

Size and Scale for Ottomans

The ottoman should be proportional to the sofa. My sofa is 2m wide; my ottoman coffee table is 1.2m wide (60% of sofa width). The ottoman height is 45cm — a few cm lower than the sofa seat (50cm). The distance from sofa to ottoman is 45cm (comfortable for reaching drinks). For a large corner sofa, a larger ottoman (1.5m x 1m) may be better. Test proportions with cardboard boxes before buying.

Upholstery Fabric for Ottomans

Ottomans get heavy use (feet, drinks, sitting). My ottoman coffee table is upholstered in heavy-duty polyester (50,000 rubs abrasion rating). The fabric is stain-resistant and easy to clean. For ottomans, choose performance fabric (olefin, polyester, or treated cotton). Avoid velvet (shows footprints) and linen (stains easily). The fabric should match or complement the sofa. I chose a contrasting color (blue ottoman with beige sofa) for visual interest.

Storage Ottoman Coffee Tables

Many ottomans have storage inside (lift the top). My ottoman coffee table stores blankets, remotes, and magazines. The storage capacity is 100 liters — very useful. The lid has a soft-close hinge (doesn't slam). For homes with limited storage, an ottoman with storage is essential. For homes with ample closets, storage is optional. The storage mechanism adds 200-300 AED to the cost but is worth it for small apartments.

Removable Tray Features

The tray on my ottoman coffee table is made from acacia wood with a non-slip rubber base (stays on the ottoman when bumped). The tray has handles on the sides for easy removal. The tray size is 115cm x 65cm (slightly smaller than the ottoman). For ottomans without a tray, drinks can tip over. A removable tray is essential for using the ottoman as a coffee table. Check that the tray has a lip to prevent spills.

Maintenance of Fabric Ottomans

Ottomans get dirty (feet, food, drinks). I vacuum my ottoman coffee table weekly. For spills, I blot immediately with a damp cloth. Every 6 months, I use a fabric cleaner (test on hidden area first). For reversible trays, flip them occasionally to distribute wear. For ottomans with storage, vacuum inside annually. With proper care, a fabric ottoman can last 7-10 years. Leather ottomans are easier to clean (wipe spills) but are more expensive.
